Everyone wants to reduce their utility bills and when you read advice on how to do so, you’re likely to see the advice that you should install curtains on your windows. This is certainly great advice but at Half Price Drapes we’d like to emphasize that not all window treatments are created equal. Here are a few ways you can make sure you’re maximizing your energy efficiency when you add curtains to your home.
Make sure you get the right length and width
The purpose of curtains as they pertain to energy efficiency is to both block heated or cooled air from getting out of your home through your windows, and to prevent hotter or cooler air from outside getting in. In order to maximize this, you’ll want to make sure that your curtains are both long enough and wide enough. If there’s room around your curtains, then that’s room for the air to get in and out.
We recommend choosing curtains that are two to three times as wide as your windows. This not only helps improve energy efficiency but also gives you the proper fullness you want. As far as length, you want to make sure that your curtains are hung at least an inch above your window sill and that they hang at least an inch below it. However, the most popular style at the moment is to hang curtains from almost the ceiling and let them pool dramatically on the ground. This will also maximize the energy efficiency of your curtains. If you can’t find the right sizes, remember that we offer custom curtains.
Choose more significant linings
The thicker your curtains are the more air they’ll block. As a result, you may want to choose thicker options like velvet curtains over sheer curtains. However, if you don’t like the heavy look of velvet, you can also choose virtually any type of fabric and have linings added. Some are lined with blackout linings, others have a single lining, while others are lined and then lined again. It’s up to you – just remember that the thicker the lining, the better its energy efficiency is likely to be.
As you can see, there are a lot of ways you can help increase the energy efficiency of your curtains. At Half Price Drapes, our number tip is to ensure you’re buying high quality curtains that will stand the test of time. We offer a wide range of options and look forward to helping you find just what you need.
