Everything You Need to Know About Ensuring Child Safety with Your Window Coverings

March 23, 2017 By Half Price Drapes Leave a Comment

There is nothing more important than the safety of your children and you’d do anything to ensure they’re not at unnecessary risk. This is true for almost every parent, and yet many don’t know that window treatments have the potential to be dangerous. The good news is that Half Price Drapes is here to help.

Do you know how dangerous the wrong window treatments can be?

Many people are shocked to learn that a child dies almost every month as a result of being strangled by window treatment cords. In fact, window treatment cords are one of the most overlooked safety concerns in the home. By following the steps we outline, you can help ensure that you get the window treatments you want while also ensuring the safety of your child.

    Choose window treatments without cords

The best option are window treatments that don’t have cords. For example, our windows shades are all completely cordless. This ensures that strangulation risks are a thing of the past. You can also hang curtains, just be sure to avoid fabric drawbacks or other cords.

    Attach cords to the walls

In the event that you have window treatments already that have continuous cord loops, just be sure that you’re anchoring those cords to your walls. If you don’t have a device right now for anchoring it, or a tensioning device, the your best bet is to contact the manufacturer of your curtains. They’re likely to provide one for free, but if they don’t they can at least tell you which options are compatible with their curtains.

    Keep cords away from kids

If your curtains have cords and you haven’t found a way to anchor them, make sure you’re keeping the cords away from kids at all times. You can do this by wrapping the cords around the cord cleats up at the top of the window.

Move baby furniture away from windows

Don’t keep your child’s crib, baby bed, or other furniture near your windows. Remember that even if the child is too small to reach the cord, they can use various objects as steps to get to them. it’s better safe than sorry.

The good news is that Half Price Drapes has a lot of options that are safe for your children. If you need help determining what will work for you, feel free to reach out to us. We are here to help you find the perfect curtains for your home.
