The fact of the matter is that many people simply don’t know how to properly hang their curtains. They assume that finding the perfect fabric and size curtain is all they need to do but the reality is that you can have the most beautiful curtains in the world and you won’t get the most out of them if you don’t hang them correctly. Check out these common errors people make when hanging curtains to find out if you’re guilty of curtain-hanging sins.
Are your curtain rods hung too low?
The most common reason for curtains being hung too low is buying curtains that are too short. As a result, people hang their rods just above their window frames. While it’s not necessary to always have curtains 20 inches above your window, you do want to hang them at least half to two-thirds of the distance between your windows and your ceiling. This helps your ceilings look taller, and fits in with what most people are used to seeing. Hanging curtains too close to the window leaves too much space and draws attention to the mistake. Lifting the curtain rod lifts the eyes and makes a room look bigger.
Are your curtains too short?
The most common mistake of course is to hang curtains so that they appear to be too short. This does exactly what short pants do: they cut off the room in a jarring way. They make a room look short and awkward. There are three main options to avoid this fate:
- Slighting floating. This option leaves your curtains less than an inch above the floor. This is a great choice if you want to hang your curtains without a break at all. They’ll hang straight, and while they won’t touch the floor they’ll come awfully close.
- The kiss. In this option, your curtains will touch the floor – but barely. It’s the most difficult to pull off because you must measure very accurately from the rod and ensure that you’re including your rings, clips, or s hooks in your measurements. This is the option that ends up looking the most intentional and custom, but it’s also the most difficult to pull off. There may be small breaks in the curtains when they’re open.
- The puddle. Just like it sounds like, the puddle is when fabric puddles on the floor. This is a great choice for those who want a romantic look in their room. This feminine, old-world option is a good choice for high quality fabrics, like washed linen or velvet, because the puddles really make it easy to see the texture of the fabric.
