You don’t have to spend thousands on a consultation with an interior designer to get a polished, put together home. We have four ways you can put on your interior design hat and think like a professional.
1. Ask yourself the important questions
Too often homeowners walk into a room and immediately start making decisions. This isn’t how an interior design team works. Instead, they ask lots of questions to unearth their client’s needs and wants. You are both your own designer and your client – but the process should be the same. Ask yourself what your goal is. Ask what important things you must consider to ensure the room can be used the way you need it to be. The more information you gather, the better your chance of finding exactly what you want.
2. Dream big
Even if you’re designing on a budget, you can still dream like you’re a millionaire. Use interior design websites and social sites to get ideas for yourself. The things you see can easily be scaled down to your budget. For example, when you see a pair of drapes for sale at $2,000 a panel, you can note what you like about them – the color, the fabric, etc. – and then head to Half Price Drapes to find a similar look for a fraction of the price.
3. Start with the hardest parts of your remodel
One of the biggest differences between the way homeowners remodel and designers remodel is in where they start the process. Homeowners tend to start with the things that are fun and quick while interior designers start with the most difficult, time-intensive projects like painting or changing the flooring. Doing this type of work first gives you something to look forward to and make it much more likely that you’ll complete the entire project.
4. Don’t be afraid to mix styles
Homeowners without design experience often focus on finding one style and sticking with it but if you look at most any work from an interior designer you’ll see that they almost always mix styles. Look for trends and styles that work together. For example, a bedroom that has a lot of natural lighting could have Moroccan and nautical styles. You can blend classic and modern styles, and so on. In fact, you don’t even have to understand these styles. If you like it then that’s enough!
