Do you wish the interior of your home was more interesting? Are you looking for ways to create a truly spectacular and unique home? At Half Price Drapes, one of our favorite tips is for you to layer colors, fabrics, and accessories. It creates rich interest and is a great way to let your personality shine through. That’s why we were excited to see an article in the DJ Journal titled Use whatever you have on hand to create layered décor, which includes some unique tips.
Stephen Thompson writes, “Layering accessories is one of those details that can make or break a home. We see it done so beautifully on mantles and bookshelves, but the truth is (don’t laugh) that if you just put several things in front of each other, with no thought at all, you could probably call it a mess,” said Wendy Wrzos in a recent decorating blog.
“The difference between a mess and the art of layering is all about taking a moment to find a common thread, and then taking even more time to play with what you have. The goal essentially is to have designed clutter; to just teeter around the edge of it looking undone, and almost accidental in appearance, but in a very deliberate way.”
Unless you count clutter, there is very little layered decorating in use today. Modern life decimates the décor of many homes. Bookshelves and tabletops are left untreated as if they’re unimportant and people walk from room to room completely blind to their surroundings. But surprisingly when you take the time to add order to your rooms – using whatever is on hand – they stop being harried way stations, and start being wellsprings of rest and tranquility.
Designers have powerful little tricks to make decorating look easy. One of the best “fixes” we have for a disarrayed décor is simply artfully rearranging accessories that are already on hand. To add more personality to your decor, try grouping things together (by color palette, shape, theme, style or texture).”
We agree with this advice and would like to point out that adding multi-colored curtains or striped curtains is a great way to tie together all the colors and fabrics you’ve included in your layering. Half Price Drapes is here to help you learn how to create the home you’ve always dreamed of.
