How to Recycle Your Old Curtains

May 25, 2016 By hpdadmin Leave a Comment

So your curtains have seen better days. The good news is that you don’t have to throw them away to rot in a landfill. After you’ve bought brand new curtains from Half Price Drapes, consider these ideas for recycling your old curtains.

You can’t simply toss them in your recycling bin

Though there are likely a few exceptions, most curbside recycling programs don’t accept textiles. As a result, you can’t just throw them into your bin. Check with your local city rules to see if there is a curbside option in place. Some communities have one day a month – or every few months – where you can put out a wider variety of materials for recycling.

A lot depends on the type of fabric your curtains are

There are many fabrics curtains can be made from including cotton, linen, velvet, silk, and faux silk. The type of fabric will determine how easy or difficult it is to recycle. For example, cotton is much easier to recycle than silk. Start by looking for local recycling centers in your community that can work with these fabrics. If you come up empty handed then you may need to think about upcycling.

Upcycling may be your best option

When we think of the three “R”s of recycling remember that recycling isn’t alone: there’s also reduce and reuse. Upcycling is essentially finding a way of reusing something. You’ll have two main options. First, you can create something else out of your curtains yourself. You may make a shower curtain, create unique kitchen napkins, or even make pillows from them.

The other main upcycling option is to donate your curtains to someone else who needs them. If you know someone in your family or have a friend who’s recently set out on their own, then they may be in need of your curtains. If not, then consider donating your curtains to your local non-profit thrift store. They may sell your curtains or they may recycle them in their fabric-bales.

Don’t recycle your curtains until you’ve found the perfect replacements

Of course, the only reason you’re able to recycle your curtains at all is because you have access to hundreds of combinations of fabrics, colors, and patterns at Half Price Drapes. Take advantage of our sale to invest in some incredible curtains that will make you glad to see your old panels go.
