Having a small budget doesn’t mean you can’t decorate your home the way you want to, it just means you need to get a little creative. Here are eight tips to help you get what you want while staying within your budget.
1. Brighten blank walls without painting the whole room
By the time you buy all the supplies you need, it can be expensive to paint an entire room, yet white walls can lack personality. A great compromise is to buy a large blank canvas and then paint it a solid color. You’ll have one accent wall that can easily be moved – without breaking the bank.
2. Dual purpose is your friend
You want as many items as you can that serve several purposes. An ottoman with storage inside is a great example, or buy a short bookcase that can double as a side table.
3. Get creative with “art”
You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get unique art. Look at your local resale store for items of similar sizes and shapes and then hang them on your wall artfully. You could collect plates, or you could add a cluster of mirrors to a wall.
4. Focus on quality over quantity
You can cut corners with some items, but it’s important to know when it’s worth it to make an investment. For example, custom curtains may cost more than simply buying some off the rack at your local discount store, but when you get draperies that properly fit your windows, and are made from high-quality materials, they’ll instantly make the room look put together and luxurious.
5. Boost your lighting
Lighting is something you need anyway, but when you focus on adding unique lights and ensuring you have your home lit from below, above, and the side, you’ll be adding visual interest without making much of an investment at all.
6. Dress up what you already own
You don’t necessarily have to purchase new pieces to make your home over. A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for old furniture, and a few minutes of sewing can help you reuse items you were otherwise planning to throw away.
7. Make bold statements with small details
It’s generally more affordable to stick with versatile furniture and accessories for most of your room but be sure to add a few bold statement pieces here and there. For example, grab some colorful, patterned lamp shades to add a punch of color and interest.
8. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns
If you insist that everything must match then you’re going to spend a lot of money! Instead, accept that different patterns and colors can go together perfectly.
