What’s the Policy on Leaving Curtains Open When Neighbors Can See Inside Your Home?

January 19, 2017 By Half Price Drapes Leave a Comment

Some people live in areas where the closest neighbor is miles away. Others can see right into their neighbor’s houses, and their neighbors can see into theirs. We’ve all likely had the sensation of walking down some street, in some town, and looking in people’s windows. It’s not that we were staring, but simply looking around, when something terrible happened – a person in the home caught our eye.

It can feel humiliating but it can also lead us to think – shouldn’t they have had their curtains closed? We reached out to an etiquette expert to ask exactly that: Is it rude to leave your curtains open if people can see into your home? Is it rude to look in if someone has left their curtains open? As you might have guessed, our etiquette expert didn’t have us a black and white answer. Instead, there are a few factors in play here.

Open windows can create an open community

One point is that having homes with their curtains open can make a place feel safer and more inviting. It can help neighbors feel closer to each other when they can see in each other’s homes and get to know faces and names. Otherwise, they may live on a street for years and never get a real sense of who they live near.

Closed curtains may be a necessity

While it may feel nice to have the curtains open, for some people it can make them feel unsafe. This is true if they have many expensive items in the rooms that would be on display. Of course, if the room is a private space, like the bedroom, then you’d need to keep the curtains closed.

It’s up to each person to weigh the pros and cons

It may not be a very satisfying answer but it’s the truth: Everyone is responsible for comparing the pros and cons and deciding if they want to leave their curtains open acheter du cialis en allemagne. They’ll need to consider where they live, what’s in the rooms that would be on display, and whether privacy, comfort, or enjoying their home is their top priority.

At Half Price Drapes we offer a lot of solutions to this and other drapery problems. For example, bottom up shades can allow you to close off the bottom part of your window while leaving the top open to let in a breeze or the shining sun.
