There comes a time in the lives of most people where we have to live somewhere small. Perhaps it's a tiny studio apartment after you've just moved to the city, or maybe you drew the short straw with your roommates and have to move into a pint-sized bedroom. No matter what the case is, making good use of the space is essential to making any small area feel more like home.
Many people need to have a desk in their homes, despite the fact that they don't use it all the time. This is a great place to organize letters and bills and to keep your electronics. However, if you're living in a small space, it might seem like getting rid of the desk is the only practical thing to do.
Before you resign yourself to a desk-less existence, consider turning an unused closet into your hidden office. This can be a wonderfully efficient use of space, and can tuck out of sight when it's not in use.
Simply remove the doors to the closet you plan on changing, and install a shelf at waist height, so that you can comfortably use it as a desk. You can then install built-in shelving, hooks, artwork and other materials as you see fit. Make sure that you don't forget the lighting as it's likely to be dark in there.
Once you've finished, pick out a beautiful set of patterned silk drapes to cover the space. This way, when it's not in use, it can be hidden behind a beautiful curtain. Install a few tiebacks to keep the drapes at bay while you're at work, and your space problem is solved!
