Have you been sniffling and sneezing these past few weeks? If so, your allergies may be to blame. Since this winter was so cold, pollen counts have been more intense than normal – some are even coining the term "pollen vortex." In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, it's also important that your home is clean and healthy. Here are a few spring cleaning tips to limit allergens:
- Get rid of carpeting: Dust mites can make homes in carpets, making hardwood floors the best option for those who suffer from allergies. However, even if you do have hardwood floors be sure to clean them on a regular basis to minimize dust. You can always opt for a chic throw rug too, which can simply be taken to the laundromat to be cleaned.
- Purchase a new shower curtain: "According to Robin Wilson, an ambassador of the allergy foundations, you should replace your vinyl shower curtain with a nylon curtain," reports lifestyle website EcoSalon. "Not only do vinyl curtains give off gas BPA, an endocrine disrupter and carcinogen, they also collect mold, which is a main cause of allergies. Additionally, use non-toxic cleaners like vinegar and water because bleach and ammonia can cause asthma."
- Vacuum curtains and drapes: Window coverings can also collect dust, so be sure to vacuum these features as part of your spring cleaning. Also, now that it's spring, you may want to switch out your heavy velvet drapes -which are more likely to collect debris – for lighter varieties.
