Three design rules you should follow

Bright window fashions can make a statement in your home.

Bright window fashions can make a statement in your home.

Although decorating your own house requires you to use your creativity and show off your unique flair, there are certain guidelines that you should follow. Take a look at some helpful tips that will make your next home project go off without a hitch:

  • Choose a focal point: "There are leading roles and supporting cast members in any production. The same holds true in design," writes Houzz.com contributor and professional interior designer Judith Taylor. "Choose your star and make it the focal point to anchor a room. Allow other items to take a secondary role. Don't ask everything to have a leading role; it will just result in visual noise." Your focal point can be any statement piece that strikes the eye. Some examples include a large couch, brightly colored artwork or even elaborate window fashions. The possibilities are endless!
  • Don't be too "matchy-matchy:" Although its great to choose a unifying theme for your home—such as a bohemian vibe or nautical mood—sometimes homeowners can go overboard. If you follow a theme too closely, your home will end up looking like it's straight out of a catalogue. Be sure to add visual diversity throughout.
  • Test out paint colors: Before committing to a certain hue, you're going to want to test out an array of paint colors on your wall. Shades look different in each house depending on the lighting and overall design elements. For this reason, it's best to ask your local hardware store for a few samples of paint before tackling the the project.
